From Frank’s Auto Glass – How to Take Care of Your New Windshield
So, your windshield was damaged beyond repair, and you’ve had a new windshield installed. After you – or your insurance company – paid for the new glass, you certainly want to get the best return on your investment. With that in mind, here are things to do and not do to take proper care of that new windshield.
Immediately After Replacement
After leaving the repair shop with your newly replaced windshield, these are the things you should do.
Don’t drive immediately: Whether the windshield has been replaced in the shop or at your remote location, let it set for at least an hour before driving.
Don’t remove the retention tape: Leave it in place for several hours after the new windshield has been installed. Better yet, wait 24 to 48 hours before removing the tape.
Provide ventilation: Open at least one window to provide ventilation inside your vehicle.
Avoid the car wash: If you insist, you can gently handwash your car 24 hours after windshield replacement. On the other hand, don’t wash your car at an automated car wash for several days. The high water pressure can loosen the glass sealing if it hasn’t had time to cure.
Avoid the slams and bumps: During the 24-48 hour curing period, close your car doors gently and, if possible, avoid driving your car on any bumpy roads.
Over the Long Haul
Beyond the curing period, if you have to park your car in the sun during summer, crack the windows to avoid overstraining the glass.
During daily driving, don’t tailgate. Instead, keep your distance behind other vehicles to reduce the risk of your windshield being hit by flying debris.
